Bannerman Castle is a great destination for a fun day out from NYC. The ruins of the rather extravagant castle (which was never intended to house royalty) are nestled on Pollepel Island (often called Bannerman Island) in the Hudson Islands State Park. Strangely, the castle was used as a storage facility for surplus military equipment and still carries the name Bannerman’s Island Arsenal cast in concrete. Sadly, the castle was totally abandoned in the mid 1900’s and fell into disrepair. Today it is owned and managed by New York State and interested visitors can go on guiding walking tours between May and October. Several special events are held in the grounds – you can check the website for more details.

Attraction Spotlight: Innisfree Garden

Located in the Hudson Valley, in Millbrook, New York, Innisfree Garden is regarded as one out of ten of the best gardens throughout the world. Innisfree Garden is truly an icon of twentieth century horticulture and architecture.

During the late 1920s, Walter and Marion Beck began working on their Millbrook, New York residence, known as Innisfree. Walter has a passion for Asian art, which was reflected among his art and the art he collected, as well as the garden ideas he and his wife created together. It wasn’t until the 1930s that Walter discovered Wang Wei, an acclaimed Chinese poet, painter, and garden of the 8th century. Walter dubbed Wei’s attention to detail and unique placing technique as “cup gardens”. This cup garden design strongly influenced what Walter’s Innisfree Garden would eventually look like.

In 1938, Walter and Marion met Lester Collins. Collins was an undergraduate student at Harvard. Together, Walter, Marion, and Collins began collaborating on the idea of the Innisfree Garden. One year after the trio met, Collins embarked on a year-long journey to Asia with John O. Simonds, another landscape architect. After returning to Harvard, Collins graduated with a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. Then, Collins served some time in World War II. After the war, Collins was hired at Harvard and quickly raised in ranks until he was Dean of the landscape architecture department.

In the mid-1950s, Collins traveled to Japan and studied the Sakuteiki, which he translated. The Sakuteiki promotes the practice of studying nature and gardens to build a garden that has an essence of others, instead of one that is a carbon copy. This idea was the prominent idea behind the garden that the Becks and Collins wanted to build at Innisfree.

When Collins returned to the United States he opened his own private practice where he worked on many notable projects such as, various gardens and the landscape for the National Zoo for the Washington, DC Smithsonian and town plans for the Florida town, Miami Lakes. Around the same time Collins was opening his private practice, the Becks were creating an endowment so Innisfree could be used as a place to study garden art. But, Marion endured an illness, which consumed all of the funds designated for the endowment. After Marion passed away in 1959, the nonprofit foundation that had control of Innisfree had to raise money to secure their ownership and settle the Beck’s debt.

With limited financial resources, Collins managed to create a perfect garden that became extremely popular and appraised worldwide. He simply kept the initial vision he made with the Becks in mind, and listened to where the garden needed enhancements. Collins worked on the Innisfree Garden until he passed away in 1993.

The Innisfree Garden is spread across 150 acres of land. There is a minimal amount of information available online about the details of the Innisfree Garden. This is to create an element of surprise and to keep the true beauty and essence of Innisfree Garden only accessible by visiting the Garden. Some of the known elements of Innisfree Garden are the:

· Channel Bridge that connects to the Island

· Mist

· Water Sculpture

· Air Spring

· Fountain Jet

· Entrance Drive

· Front Lawn

· Tiptoe Rock

· Japanese primroses

A list of the wildlife that grows on Innisfree Garden can be found on Innisfree Garden’s official website.

The only educational opportunity available at Innisfree Garden is the guided tour program. In this program, tour groups are led by specially trained employees. Throughout the tour, the tour guide tells an overall in-depth and special story of how Innisfree was created, biographies of the people who created it, and how members of the nonprofit foundation were instrumental in building and maintaining Innisfree. Also, the tour guides can answer any questions visitors have about the wildlife that grows and thrives at the Innisfree Garden.

Although there is an admission fee for typical visitors and tour groups, admission is free into Innisfree Garden for school field trips. The only thing that school field trips have to pay for is transportation to Innisfree Garden. But, schools may be eligible for reduced or free transportation expenses determining on their needs.

For more information about the guided tours and field trip opportunities at Innisfree Garden, head over to their website or contact or visit them during their hours of operation.

Innisfree Garden regularly hosts a combination of public and private events throughout the year. Since the public events at Innisfree Garden are regularly changing, check out the Garden’s online events calendar for more details. Aside from the public events at Innisfree Garden, the Garden is the perfect location for a private event. There are designated areas for private events at the Garden.

Attraction Spotlight: Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz

Mohonk Preserve protects more than 8,000 acres of mountain ridges, forests, streams and other New York environments through the support of donors, members and community partnerships. They manage and safeguard the Hudson valley, Shawangunks, and other natural lands as a nonprofit preserve with over 165,000 bikers, hikers, skiers, nature observers and climbers annually.

History

The Mohonk Trust was established on February 26, 1963 with a group of trustees and a small donation of $100 from Mabel C. Smiley. In 1966, The Mohonk Trust acquired 487 acres of the Trapps parcel from the Lake Mohonk Corporation. This parcel of land is one of the most impressive climbing attractions in the eastern US and established Mohonk preserve as a contributor to the sport of mountaineering.

Mohonk Preserve has been dedicated to offering educational opportunities to students in the region. Dr. Stephen Collins began using the preserve in 1967 as an outdoor laboratory space for his advanced ecology class and the founders of Mohonk Preserve have lead educational programming as well including a study on the Gypsy Moth, which was the first study on the creature and how it evolved without pesticides in the forest. An education program was also set up in 1985 with the New Paltz Central School District and the First Junior Naturalist program was offered at the preserve in 1989.

1967 also saw expansion of Mohonk Preserve in the acquisition of 687 more acres from Lake Mohonk Corporation called the Oakwood Parcel. Two years later, the Millbrook parcel of 1,287 acres was purchased and over the next 15 years an additional 5,000 acres were purchased from Lake Mohonk Corp. By 1972 the preserve hired its first full time park ranger.

Mohonk Preserve has been involved in many ecology projects since its inceptions as well. In 1975, Peregrine falcons were reintroduced to the area successfully after being extinct, Fishers were reintroduced in 1977 as predators, Black Vultures coming to the area and more.

In spring of 1980, The Mohonk Preserve Daniel Smiley Research Center is established to house the research and natural data and collections of the Mohonk Preserves work and archives. This research center also established an internship in 1993. Six years later on July 1st, 1986, Mohonk Preserve and the Mohonk Mountain House were named National Historic Landmarks by the US Department of the Interior.

A Visitors Center was added in 1998 followed by the Slingerland Pavilion later that fall. Today, visitors can also see the Eli van Leuven Cabin that was restored in 2000, see archaeological dig sites, enjoy interpretive programs on climbing at the Trapps, bird watch from the Open Space Conservancy, participate in the Citizen Naturalist Program and much more.
