Hotel Spotlight: Deep Creek Fishing Club

Deep Creek Fishing Club, situated in the scenic fishing wonderland of Ninilchik, Alaska (just under 200 miles to the south of Anchorage), offers cabins and on-site fishing excursions. They offer dining, even delivering fresh pastries and hot coffee to each cabin’s front door in the morning. Although the location is fairly remote, the facilities were designed to provide the best of both worlds (the modern and nature). Lodging at the Fishing Club is in one of the on-site cabins. There are a variety of them on the premises, and guests are able to request specific cabins when booking their stay.

Each cabin is situated on the oceanfront and offers hotel guests panoramic views of both the water and the snowcapped volcanoes on Cook Inlet with large windows. Breakfast is served in the morning in the lodge, with a menu designed to be hearty to prepare hotel guests for a full day of fishing and outdoor expeditions.

Fishing

Deep Creek is known for their fully guided, intensive variety of fishing expeditions that leave from the Fishing Club. Both saltwater and freshwater fishing is available, and the options change daily to cater to what is in season and what hotel guests are looking for.

Saltwater fishing is perhaps most popular, due to the area being known as one of the top spots for halibut fishing in the world. In fact, halibut of more than 300 pounds are caught at the Cook Inlet on a regular basis. Salmon are also prevalent, as well as rockfish and giant lingcod. Guests will be taken out in one of the club’s 28 feet cabin boats (which can hold up to four people) and are fitted with top notch terminal tackle and Accurate Reels.

For freshwater fishing, the club takes guests to 40 of the 300 available freshwater streams in the local area. The creeks are often clear and hotel guests can fish 12 different fish species, including five unique species of salmon, rainbow trout, and northern pike. Fisherman can do either fly or spinner fishing or use one of the available river sleds to troll, drift, or wade. Fishing guides are also available to help.

A valid fishing license is required, which can be purchased online in advance. Additionally, king salmon require an additional stamp which must be purchased in person at a local grocery store.

Fish can be stored overnight for a small fee and can be shipped at an additional cost. Processing is also available on-site.

Bag limits are strictly enforced. Check the website for more specific details.

Bear Viewing

Another opportunity offered at Deep Creek is bear viewing and photography. Hotel guests can purchase an optional adventure package, which includes one day of other saltwater or freshwater fishing, ocean kayaking (in Kachemak Bay), nature hikes, boat trips to Halibut Cove, Gull Island, and Seldovia, dog sledding, gold panning, horseback riding, a spa day, and a visit to a local oyster farm.
