Around the same time, the U.S. Army arrived in the area to establish a telegraph station and a trading post for miners was soon set up in the nearby Tofty and Eureka mining districts. What are the 25 Best Alaska Honeymoon Ideas?

The 25 Best Alaska Honeymoon Ideas according to local experts are:

Hotel Spotlight: Favorite Bay Lodge

Near the small community of Angoon on the west side of Admiralty Island lies Favorite Bay Lodge, surrounded by the iconic glacial waterways, snowcapped peaks, and dense forests of Southeast Alaska.

The area’s abundant freshwater and saltwater fishing draws travelers from all over the world every summer. The island boasts the world’s most dense population of brown bear, while nearby Chatham Straits offers once-in-a-lifetime viewing of feeding humpback whales. Many of the area’s most popular activities lie within minutes of Favorite Bay Lodge, a 12-room all-inclusive hotel, kitchen, and travel guide with services to suit families, couples, or any small group.

Favorite Bay offers 12 two-person guest rooms, each with full bath with soaking tub and shower, inland water views and unique theme and decor drawn from the area’s native wildlife.

Guests can relax in front of the fireplace or take in the bayside views from the Great Room, or head to the Loft to grab a book from the library or catch up on email at the guest workstation.

The Lodge offers special children’s rates as well as reservations for large family and business groups.

Dining

Reservations at Favorite Bay Lodge include daily made-to-order breakfasts and lunches, as well as four-course dinners at the Exhibition Kitchen. The kitchen prepares a menu of gourmet Northwestern dishes, emphasizing the area’s fresh seafood such as Dungeness Crab, King and Silver Salmon and Spotted Prawns. Guests can learn the craft behind the cuisine in the demonstration kitchen with techniques on preparing fish with classic sauces and desserts taught by kitchen’s lead chef.

Favorite Bay’s team of all-local, Coast Guard certified guides accompany guests on ocean and freshwater fishing experiences.

Favorite Bay’s remote location on Admiralty Island makes for superior saltwater fishing just minutes from the Lodge in waters teeming with five species of salmon, halibut, and rockfish. Favorite Bay provides all the necessary gear from bait and tackle to waterproof attire, along with a gourmet box lunch for the trip.

Freshwater fishing takes guests by boat to nearby streams with Dolly Varden, Cutthroat and Steelhead Trout runs, as well as seasonal freshwater salmon fishing, to fish from kayaks or canoes.

Back on land, Lodge staff can process the day’s catch for the trip home, with filleting, vacuum sealing, flash freezing and packaging in an insulated fish box.

Nearby Chatham Straits is home to humpback whales, killer whales, and porpoises thanks to the waterway’s rich supply of krill and herring, making Favorite Bay an ideal whale watching spot. Guided kayaking trips are one way to explore the area’s waterways and native marine life, with gear and packed lunch provided.

Trails through the Tongass National Forest offer scenic waterfall views, wild mushroom and blueberry picking and secluded picnic spots to enjoy a packed lunch under the dense canopy of trees or on the shore of a river or lake.

Just north of Angoon, Danger Point Trail is a 2.5-mile hike with views of the Chatham Strait and other islands among the bay. A local favorite for a morning walk, the shorter Cemetery Trail passes through a cemetery to link up with Danger Point Trail.

Guests can go trapping for Dungeness Crab and Spot Prawns along with Favorite Bay guides in the inlets of scenic Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof Islands, with a sampling of the day’s catch prepared by the Lodge’s kitchen.

A visit to Angoon lends insight into the history and culture of the Native Tlingit people, with the 14 wood-framed clan houses lining the town’s Beaver Trail Road virtually unchanged over the last 100 years. The area boasts one the world’s densest brown bear populations, with an estimated 1,600 bears living on Admiralty island, and just 450 year-round Angoon residents. Visitors can comb the area’s miles of beaches for treasures washed ashore.

The Cross-Admiralty Canoe Route is a 32-mile canoeing and kayaking water trail linking seven mountain lakes across the island, with several Forest Service cabins along the trail for rest and shelter. About a two-hour kayak trip up the water trail, Hasselborg Lake is a local favorite for watching the native wildlife, including Sitka black-tailed deer and the brown bears that feed on salmon running through the glacier-fed streams.

Shopping and dining in Angoon are limited to a single general store: The Angoon Trading Co., which offers snacks, sundries, gifts, and clothing.

Glacier Bay National Park, accessible from Angoon by floatplane or ferry, encompasses 3.3 million acres of inner Alaskan wilderness. Park activities include camping, hiking, kayaking, backpacking, and rafting, with mountain and glacier views throughout.

More Hot Springs in Alaska

Hot springs in the state of Alaska are more plentiful than many people may expect. From the Southeast region of the state up through the Interior, and many places in between, visitors and local residents alike have many different hot springs to choose from for a relaxing place to unwind. The biggest problem people may have with the Alaska hot springs, however, is accessibility. As with many of the natural wonders of Alaska, they aren’t necessarily always easily accessible. While there are several off-the-beaten-path hot springs, there are a number that can be accessed with ease.

Chief Shakes Hot Springs

The Chief Shakes Hot Springs is a popular U.S Forest Service-operated hot springs in the state of Alaska. It’s a particularly popular spot among locals, especially on holidays and the weekends. Found in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness area near Wrangell, the day-use hot springs facility consists of an open-air hot tub and one sheltered tub, along with outhouses, benches, and dressing rooms. The Chief Shakes Hot Springs can be reached via a short trail located off of Hot Springs Slough. Circle Hot Springs

The Circle Hot Springs, located around one hundred miles from Fairbanks in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, is an unincorporated community and hot springs area along Steese Highway. The hot springs are situated approximately eight miles off of Mile 127.8. In addition to being accessed by the highway, the springs can also be reached by plane from the Circle Hot Springs Airport. Surrounding the Circle Hot Springs is an area with a rich mining history that still retains a degree of folklore and mystery. These hot springs were discovered by prospector William Greats back in the year 1893.

Kanuti Hot Springs

A very remote hot springs area, the Kanuti Hot Springs can be found around twelve miles off of Mile 103 on the Dalton Highway. During the summer season, numerous visitors take the 14-mile float trip from the Dalton Highway crossing down the scenic Kanuti River, hiking back over the Caribou Mountain.
