Pigeon Forge is a fantastic base for nature lovers, as it’s only a five-mile drive to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As America’s most-visited national park, the landscape is beautiful and full of exciting activities.
Hiking is a huge draw, as the park has more than 850 miles of trails around the mountains. They are well marked and open in all seasons, offering a huge variety of routes to suit all abilities, time scales, and intentions. There are bits of everything to see, from mountain streams and waterfalls to blooms and butterflies, and maybe even historic buildings or ruins.
Fishing is also a popular pastime, as there are 2,115 miles of streams in the National Park. The Great Smoky Mountains is one of the only places to catch wild trout in the Eastern United States, and rainbow and brook trout are favorite river catches. All aspiring anglers need to make sure they have a valid fishing license or permit and stop by a ranger station for a list of fishable areas and regulations.
Besides walking or fishing, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the breathtaking surroundings. Horseback riding and trail cycling are very popular, while water lovers can indulge in a spot of kayaking or white-water rafting through the winding rivers.
Some visitors want to spend some time in the town, as Pigeon Forge is home to both Dollywood and Dollywood’s Splash Country Water Adventure Park. Combined, the theme parks stretch across almost 150 acres and feature thrilling rides, stunning shows, Tennessee’s first water coaster, and a healthy helping of Dolly Parton’s signature charm.
Other attractions in town include the Titanic Museum, which has over 400 artifacts both private and personal telling the story of the famously doomed ship and making history come alive. Music fans are sure to enjoy the Southern Gospel Museum and Gall of Fame too, and they are sure to find out more about pioneers of the genre. There’s also the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, which, at 200 feet high, offers fantastic views of the town and surrounding countryside. You don’t even need to climb all the way up a mountain.
Guests can also explore Gatlinburg and Sevierville, Tennessee, which are within driving distance of Pigeon Forge. Neither town has huge populations, but their rural atmosphere and laid-back hospitality are sure to make every weary visitor feel right at home.
A variety of cabins are pet friendly, allowing your favorite four-legged friends to come with you. Pet friendly cabins have between one and seven bedrooms, allowing for even big families to have plenty of room. Staff members recommend the Ocanaluftee River Trail and Gatlinburg Trail as perfect spots for walking leashed dogs.
